In a conversation ahead of her participation in participation in RETHINKING PHARMA, a meeting of professionals from the Pharmaceutical Industry in Portugal – taking place on 5 June 2025 – Joana Piriquito Santos discusses the challenges of pharmaceutical research and women's journey in this field.

She also cited positive national trends, including one of the highest percentages of female inventors named in patent applications in Europe, above Spain and Germany.

This conversation also explores several key factors for the pharmaceutical sector, such as industrial property, the harmonisation of European rules in this respect and the Unified Patent Court.

The lawyer highlights the first case of the Lisbon local division of this court, in which NPL Advogados had the privilege of representing a telecommunications company in an injunction proceeding. This case "put the Lisbon local division on the map, highlighting the important role that Portugal can play in the application and development of patent law in the European context".

The conversation continues with a focus on technological advancements, particularly the role of artificial intelligence in pharmaceutical research, data protection, and the future of the pharmaceutical industry in Portugal.
